HISTORY
The Skirrid Inn dates back hundreds of years and is thought by many to be the most haunted Inn in Wales. Through its history the Skirrid has seen many a famous - and infamous - visitor come and go through its doors...many of which exited the premises in a state of permanent slumber, thanks in no small part to the deadly 'Bloody' Judge Jeffreys.
'Bloody' Judge Jeffreys was responsible for hanging numerous villains WITHIN the Skirrid Inn's wall, actually swinging them from the main staircase. The very same slab which on which the dead bodies were then placed can still be seen in the inn to this day. Overall, it is rumoured, that 180 miscreants were hanged here between the 12th and 17th century's. The judge's courtroom is now a bedroom and the original prisoner holding cell a store room.
Another famous associate with the inn is said to be Owain Glyndwr, who rallied his Welsh troops to battle against the English. Legend has it that he used the mounting stone within the inn's forecourt, before leading his men to war.
GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS
The Skirrid Inn has a number of spectral inhabitants within its ancient walls, with perhaps the most famous being that of Fanny Price.
FANNY PRICE
Fanny Price was reputedly a barmaid who served the premises c17th century. She is buried in the church only 100 yards or so from the Skirrid Inn. Many a visitor believe they have seen her around the bar areas and upper rooms.
Will she put in an appearance during our investigation?
MYSTERIOUS ROPE BURN MARKS
Visitors have often reported difficulty in breathing and a tightening of the throat. This is sometimes accompanied by a burning sensation and, on occasion, what appear to be rope burn marks are also present. Is this a connection to the hangings which took place here?
THE DEVIL'S BREW
On a shelf beside the stone fireplace is sited a tankard with a very curious tale.
Back in the dark past of the inn's history legend has it that the innkeeper poured out a cup of 'Devils Brew', an offering to Satan. Legend also has it that the following morning the contents of the cup appears to have vanished, as if being sipped by some unknown entity. This pouring of the 'Devils Brew' continues to this day.
FACES AT THE WINDOWS & POLTERGEIST ACTIVITY
Strange and unknownfaces have been seen to peer in at the windows of the inn, only for nobody to be around upon investigation.
Glasses and other items have been witnessed moving on their own accord, sometimes quite forcefully. One customer witnessed his change from an order lift off the bar and move on its own.
